Azerbaijan: Martial Law and Curfew (September 27, 2020)

As posted on the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan’s website at 19:05 this evening, the President has declared martial law for the entire territory of Azerbaijan, starting at midnight (00:00) on September 28, 2020.

During the martial law, curfew will be in effect from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am (21:00 to 06:00) in Baku, Ganja, Sumgayit, Yevlakh, Mingachevir, Naftalan, Absheron, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Agjabadi, Beylagan, Agdam, Barda, Tartar, Goranboy, Goygol, Dashkasan, Gadabay, Tovuz, Shamkir, Gazakh and Agstafa districts.

The President’s website explains that this is to prohibit people from being on the streets and in other public places without special permits and identity documents, and to apply a special entry-exit regime to take measures to restrict the movement of vehicles.

U.S. citizens throughout Azerbaijan are encouraged to continue to monitor local news reporting for any new developments. The Embassy will continue to monitor the security situation and provide additional information as needed.
